30 April 2009 -- US cotton pullover imports strongly fell in the first two months of the year, being negatively affected by the economic recession. Shipments from China however surged while strongly rising from a small number of other Asian countries. Central American suppliers are confronted with a dramatic decline in US orders.
US imports of cotton imports are being subject to dramatic changes this year with imports falling from a larger number of origins while surging from China.
Total shipments of men/boy pullovers from foreign countries declined 12% in volume terms in the first two months of the year.
They simultaneously rose 73% from China.
Overall imports of women/girl pullovers fell 16% but nearly doubled from China.
Such trends are obviously due to the combination of economic recession and final lifting of textile quotas.
Central American Decline
Central American suppliers were strongly hit by the surge in Chinese shipments, as expected for a large number a years.
In the men/boys segment, Honduran origins lost 24% in US$ terms in January and February from the same period last year.
Shipments from Haiti however surged 75%, reflecting the additional advantages offered by Washington to the impoverished country, after rules of origin were relaxed for duty-free access at US borders.
Shipments from Indonesia and Pakistan also strongly rose, as both countries are competing on a lower-priced segment than China.
Higher Chinese Prices
While Chinese suppliers strongly cut prices on the men/boys segment, they significantly raised them on the women/girls segment, with US orders surging in both cases.
This is because China continuously shifted to higher added value in the past, in order to take a full advantage of relatively low US quantitative limits.
US quotas therefore allowed Chinese suppliers to overcome any future jump in their production costs, like experienced in the past year.
