2 July 2001 - Uzbekistan's cotton crop will be lower than earlier expected, agriculture officials last week admitted. Exports could therefore decrease to 690,000 tons of cotton fibers (lint) in 2001-2002 against 720,000 tons this marketing year and 893,000 in 1999-2000. This is a 23% fall in two years.
6 June 2001 - Russia's textile boom could be curbed by reinstatement of a 20% VAT on cotton imports, the agriculture attaché at Moscow's US embassy reports.
27 October 2000 - Uzbekistan's cotton production will be much lower than expected by Tashkent's government a few months ago. Following the worst drought in years this summer, heavy rains appeared for the harvest period.
17 August 2000 - Uzbekistan's cotton production will further decrease this year mainly due to water shortages. Output and exports of "white gold" are have been substantially cut since the end of the Soviet Union. However, Uzbekistan remains world's second largest cotton exporter.
