US imports of cotton pullovers from China surged in 2009, after quotas were eliminated. Other suppliers however resisted, especially from Indonesia and Vietnam, thanks to the high level of Chinese prices, and as reflected by our series of statistical tables.
US cotton pullover imports strongly rose from China in 2009, after quotas disappeared.
Other suppliers survived the Chinese surge, however, especially from Indonesia and Vietnam.
Imports from China jumped by 120% in volume terms on the men's market with China becoming the leading origin in value terms.
Shipments from Honduras sharply fell at the same time, mainly due to political problems in the country.
The two countries are not offering the same type of products, with Chinese pullovers 300% more expensive than Honduran ones, on average.
Honduras more suffered from competition with Haiti and its duty-free status under very generous rules of origin.
Indonesia offered product prices in line with average market prices, by contrast.
Whatever the surge in Chinese sales, imports from Indonesia rose 32% in volume terms on the men's market.
Indonesia also got similarly good results on the women's market with an annual increase of 24.6% in volume terms.
Chinese shipments surged 136% in the meantime.
Vietnam faced more difficulties although sales still rose to the US market.
The Chinese prices are lower on the women's market than on the men's market, compared with other suppliers, probably explaining a larger share of US total imports in the women's segment than in the men's segment.
In order to gain additional market shares, China will have to further cut prices while its production costs are rapidly rising.
